Refresh, renew, expire: listing upkeep and what Etsy charges
What refreshing a listing changes, what Etsy's US$0.20 listing fee is charged for, and when letting a listing expire is the better decision.
Refresh, renew, expire: listing upkeep and what Etsy charges
Three words on the Etsy dashboard sound similar and mean different things. One is free, one costs money, and one is often the right answer even though it looks like giving up.
Refresh: free, changes your listing
“Listings flagged for refresh” means a listing has not been edited in a while. Etsy takes recency into account, so a listing that has sat untouched for months is competing against ones that have been worked on.
Refreshing rotates the tags on a listing. That is a genuine edit, which is the point: it gives Etsy something new and tests a different tag combination at the same time.
What it does not do:
- It does not change your title, price, images or description.
- It does not cost anything. Editing a live listing is free.
- It will not run twice in a day on the same listing.
- It cannot run on a listing with fewer than two tags, because there is nothing to rotate.
Refreshes arrive as prepared changes you approve. See What the Plan can change.
Renew: costs money, restarts the clock
Etsy listings run for four months. After that they expire.
Etsy charges a listing fee of US$0.20 each time a listing is published or renewed. That fee is Etsy’s, billed to your Etsy payment account in your shop’s currency. It does not go through Elistit and we never see it. Etsy’s current terms are on their fees page.
Renewing happens in three ways:
- Automatically, if the listing has auto renew switched on. Etsy renews it at expiry and charges the fee.
- Manually, when you set an expired listing back to active.
- On sale, when a sold out listing is brought back.
All three are the same fee. There is no cheaper route.
The renewals panel
The Etsy dashboard shows listings due to renew within seven days and estimates the cost. It flags the ones with fewer than five views in thirty days, because those are the ones worth a decision: you are about to pay to keep a listing live that almost nobody is seeing.
Activating in bulk
Selecting several listings and activating them charges the fee for each one. Elistit shows the count and the total before you confirm, and puts the figure on the confirm button. Read it before clicking. Two hundred expired listings is forty dollars.
Expire: free, and sometimes correct
An expired listing costs nothing while it sits expired. It is not deleted, it is not a failure, and you can bring it back at any time by activating it.
Letting something expire is the right call when:
- It has had almost no views over months. Renewing buys four more months of the same.
- The design was seasonal and the season has gone. Renew it a few weeks before the season returns instead.
- You have replaced it with a better version.
A shop with a hundred expired listings is not a neglected shop. It may be a shop that stopped paying for shelf space nobody was walking past.
A practical routine
- Look at the renewals panel weekly.
- For anything flagged as low view, decide: improve it, or let it expire.
- Approve refreshes on listings that are getting views but not sales. Those are the ones where a tag change can move something.
- Leave your best sellers alone unless you have a specific reason. They are already working.
FAQ
Does refreshing a listing reset its age or its history? No. It updates the listing. Views, favourites and sales history stay with it.
Is tag rotation allowed by Etsy? Editing your own listings is normal shop management. Refreshing changes tags on a listing you own, through Etsy’s own API, one listing at a time.
Will refreshing hurt a listing that is already ranking? It can, which is why bestsellers need an extra confirmation before a prepared change is applied, and why the advice above is to leave winners alone. A listing that sells has already proven its tags.
Can I turn auto renew on or off from Elistit? Not at the moment. That setting lives in your Etsy shop manager.
If I let a listing expire, do I lose the design? No. Your files stay in Elistit and in your Drive. Expiry is an Etsy shelf state, not a deletion.
Why did activating some listings fail? Etsy only accepts a state change to active or inactive, and it will not activate a listing that is missing something it requires, such as an image or a complete shipping profile. Elistit passes Etsy’s own reason back to you rather than a generic failure.
