Editing a listing

What the listing editor changes on Etsy, what the score measures, why it asks for shorter titles than most advice, and what happens to the AI disclosure paragraph.

Editing a listing

Opening a listing gives you the full editor: title, tags, description, price, quantity, category, attributes, images and delivery settings, with a score that updates as you type.

Saving pushes to Etsy

Every save writes to your Etsy listing straight away. There is no draft state and no separate publish step for a listing that is already live.

If Etsy rejects part of the change, the save is kept locally and you get Etsy’s own reason back rather than a generic failure. That usually means a tag over 20 characters, a price outside your shop’s allowed range, or a category that does not accept one of the attributes you set.

The score, and what it is not

The number in the ring is ours. It is not an Etsy score, Etsy does not see it, and it has no direct effect on where you rank.

What it does is check the listing against the things Etsy says it looks at: a clear title, all thirteen tags, a description that explains the item, alt text on the images, and the completeness signals that make a listing look finished. A listing scoring well is a listing with nothing obviously missing. That is worth having, and it is not the same as a promise.

Two scores appear in different places and they measure different things. The pill on the listings grid is the health score, which watches how a live listing is performing. The ring in the editor scores the content in front of you as you write it. A listing can score well in the editor and poorly on the grid: that combination usually means the listing is written well but is not being seen or converting, which is a different problem with a different fix.

Why it asks for a shorter title than you expect

Most Etsy advice tells you to fill the title with keywords. That advice was right for a long time and it is now out of date.

Etsy’s current guidance asks sellers to state the item once, put the traits that distinguish it near the front, keep the title easy to scan, and move the supporting detail into tags, attributes and the description. Etsy suggests considering fewer than fifteen words. The title no longer has to carry every phrase you want to rank for.

So the editor rewards a title a buyer can read in one pass, and flags a long one. The keywords you cut are not lost: tags, attributes and the description are all part of what Etsy matches against.

Etsy allows 140 characters. Anything under that is legal. Under about 70 also survives being cut off in search results and on phones, which is where most of your traffic looks at it.

The editor also flags repeated words and subjective filler like “beautiful” or “perfect”. Etsy names both of these directly. A repeated word is a slot spent twice, and an adjective describing your own taste is a slot that could have carried a trait a buyer searches for.

Description length

The editor aims for roughly 180 to 280 words: what the item is, who it suits, what is included, and how it arrives.

That is shorter than the “write as much as possible” advice you may have read. Buyers skim, and detail past that point rarely gets read. If you have more to say, the description is not the only place: attributes carry structured facts, and tags carry the phrasing.

The AI disclosure paragraph

Listings made with AI carry a short disclosure paragraph in the description. Etsy requires it, and a listing missing it can be removed.

If you delete it, the editor tells you it is gone and adds it back when you save. This is not a limitation to work around: it is the paragraph that keeps the listing compliant. What you can change is its wording, under Branding, and your version is then used everywhere.

Listings that are not AI-generated do not carry one and will not have one added. Artwork you uploaded yourself is your own work, and saying otherwise would be inaccurate in the other direction.

Editing a listing that already sells

A listing with sales has proven its title and tags against real buyers. Rewriting it is the most expensive experiment available, because you cannot get the old version’s performance back to compare against.

Change one thing at a time on your best sellers, and give it a few weeks. On listings with no sales, change whatever you like: there is nothing to lose.

See Refresh, renew, expire for what editing does and does not reset.

FAQ

Does editing reset my listing’s stats or ranking? Views, favourites and sales stay with the listing. Editing does not start it over.

My score went down after I shortened the title. Is that right? Check which part dropped. If the title bar went up and something else went down, you have changed two things. If the score fell overall on a shorter, clearer title, tell us: that would be the score being wrong, not you.

Why can I not publish a draft from here? Publishing new listings happens in your Etsy dashboard for now. The editor works on listings that already exist.

Can I edit several listings at once? For tags and sections, yes. See Bulk editing listings.

The score says 100 but nothing sells. The score reads the listing text. It cannot see your images, your price against the competition, or your reviews, and those decide most sales. A full score means nothing is missing from the listing, not that the product will sell.

Do I have to use all thirteen tags? Etsy gives you thirteen. Using fewer wastes slots that cost nothing. See Tag anchors explained for what to spend them on.
