Design Checklist: Before Selling Wall Art on Etsy

Before you publish your first wall art listing, run through this 32-point checklist. Missing even one element can tank your conversion rate or trigger Etsy’s quality filters.

Visual Design (5 checks)

This is what buyers see in thumbnails and previews. One weak visual element kills the sale.

  • Composition is balanced — Subject matter fills 60-80% of frame, not cramped or too spacious
  • Colors are distinct in thumbnail — Design is recognizable at 200×200px (Etsy’s thumbnail size)
  • No text elements — Wall art should speak visually, not via text overlays
  • High contrast edges — If design has a border or edge, contrast is clear and intentional
  • Focal point is obvious — The eye lands on the main subject within 1 second

Why it matters: 89% of Etsy browsers judge designs in thumbnail view. If it looks weak at 200px, it won’t sell at any size.


Technical Specifications (7 checks)

One technical error cascades into delivery problems, customer complaints, or Etsy flagging your listing.

  • Image dimensions match aspect ratio — If designing for 2:3 ratio, dimensions are exactly 2:3 (no rounding)
  • File saved as RGB (not CMYK) — Digital displays use RGB; CMYK is print-only and will look wrong on-screen
  • DPI is 300+ for print quality — 300 DPI is the standard for print-on-demand and digital printables
  • Image size under 25 MB — Etsy’s upload limit; most should be under 5 MB
  • File format is JPG or PNG — Never BMP, TIFF, or PSD for Etsy uploads
  • No transparency issues — If PNG with transparency, edges are clean (no halos or weird artifacts)
  • Color profile is sRGB — Standard for web; ensures colors look consistent across devices

Why it matters: Technical issues trigger customer complaints (“it printed dark”, “colors look washed out”). Poor DPI gets flagged by Etsy’s quality scanners.


Mockup Setup (5 checks)

Mockups are your #1 conversion tool. More buyers convert when they see the design in context.

  • At least 3 mockup scenes — Variety in room settings (bedroom, living room, hallway, office, etc.)
  • All mockups show design clearly — No shadows obscuring the art, no weird angles
  • Mockup files are under 2 MB each — Large mockups slow page load and hurt Etsy’s algorithm
  • Mockups are professional — Use Elistit’s mockup generator or quality PSD templates; avoid cheap phone-in-frame mockups
  • Mockup colors match design — No weird color shifts in composite; design looks like it belongs in the scene

Title, tags, and description are where Etsy’s algorithm decides if you rank. Nail this section.

Title

  • Includes primary keyword — If targeting “minimalist wall art”, that phrase is in the title
  • Title under 140 characters — Etsy’s limit; longer titles are truncated
  • Readable, not stuffed — Avoid “wall art | minimalist | boho | nursery | print | digital | download”
  • Descriptor + size/type — “Minimalist Botanical Wall Art Print” not just “Wall Art”

Tags (13 tags max)

  • Primary keyword uses 1 tag — “minimalist wall art” as a single tag
  • Long-tail variations in tags — “boho nursery wall art”, “botanical minimalist print”, etc.
  • Buyer intent keywords — Include “for home”, “printable”, “instant download”, “digital product”
  • No repeat words — Each tag is unique (don’t use “art” in every tag)

Description

  • First line has keyword — Searchers see first 100 chars; hook them with keyword + value
  • Mentions use case — “Perfect for: nursery, bedroom, living room” helps search + conversions
  • Includes file format — “High-resolution PNG download”
  • Mentions Etsy shipping — “Digital delivery, instant download (no physical product)”
  • Includes dimensions — “2000×3000 pixels, ready to print”

Why it matters: Etsy SEO is 60% title/tags, 30% listing quality, 10% shop authority. Get this right and you’ll rank for your niche.


Delivery & Files (3 checks)

What the buyer actually receives. One file error = refund request.

  • ZIP file is organized — If multiple files, ZIP structure is logical (don’t dump 10 files in root)
  • File names are clear — “Minimalist-Botanical-11x14.jpg” not “FINAL_v3_updated_REAL.jpg”
  • Instructions included — Brief TXT or PDF saying “How to use this download” (what format, how to print, DPI info)

SEO & Competitive Check (3 checks)

Step back and compare your listing to top-ranked competitors.

  • Your thumbnail is more visually interesting than competitors’ — Check top 5 listings for your keyword
  • Your price is within market range — Not 50% below (looks cheap) or 50% above (looks greedy)
  • Your design solves a real aesthetic problem — “This is exactly what minimalist + boho buyers want right now”
