Best Digital Art Sizes for Etsy in 2026

The exact file dimensions, ratios, and DPI settings Etsy buyers expect for digital wall art and posters in 2026 — with frame mappings, file format guidance, and the math behind every number.

A reference chart of the best digital art sizes for Etsy in 2026 — wall art ratios, poster dimensions, and standard frame sizes

Why file sizes matter on Etsy

Etsy buyers downloading digital wall art expect files they can print at home or send to a print shop without any resizing, recropping, or guesswork. If your files are the wrong dimensions, you get returns, bad reviews, and fewer repeat customers — and on Etsy, a string of bad reviews on a low-volume listing is hard to recover from.

The standard expectation in 2026 is 300 DPI across five standard wall art ratios, packaged as a single ZIP delivery with each ratio in its own clearly-named file. This is what your top-revenue competitors are doing, and it’s what buyers have been trained to expect.

The five standard wall art ratios

Every serious wall art listing should include these five ratios. Each ratio maps to specific frame sizes available off-the-shelf at IKEA, Target, Hobby Lobby, Michaels, and the major UK/EU retailers.

RatioCommon frame sizes (in/cm)Pixel dimensions (300 DPI)
2:34×6”, 8×12”, 12×18”, 16×24”, 20×30” (10×15, 20×30, 30×45 cm)3600 × 5400 (12×18”)
3:46×8”, 9×12”, 12×16”, 18×24” (15×20, 30×40 cm)3600 × 4800 (12×16”)
4:54×5”, 8×10”, 16×20”, 24×30”4800 × 6000 (16×20”)
5:75×7”, 10×14”3000 × 4200 (10×14”)
ISO/AA5, A4, A3, A2 (210×297, 297×420, 420×594 mm)3508 × 4961 (A3)

Including all five ratios in a single listing increases your perceived value and ensures the buyer can print the piece at whatever frame size they already own. Listings that ship only one or two ratios convert noticeably worse — the buyer has to do the math, and many won’t.

Why include international (ISO/A) sizes?

Roughly 40% of Etsy print buyers are outside the US, and they almost universally use ISO sizes (A4, A3, A2) rather than US inch-based ratios. Shipping a US-only listing is leaving a third of your addressable market on the table. Always include at least A4 and A3 — they fit into the same source artwork with minor crop adjustments.

Poster dimensions

For posters specifically — distinct from gallery wall art — the most popular Etsy sizes in 2026 are:

  • 18×24” (5400 × 7200 px) — the most common US poster size, fits standard IKEA RIBBA and Target poster frames
  • 24×36” (7200 × 10800 px) — large statement format, common in living rooms and commercial spaces
  • 11×17” (3300 × 5100 px) — tabloid/small poster, popular for affordable wall art
  • A2 (4961 × 7016 px) — international standard, widely used in UK, EU, Australia
  • A1 (7016 × 9933 px) — large international, premium-positioned listings

All at 300 DPI minimum. Anything less and the print will look soft when scrutinised at arm’s length — which is exactly how buyers experience posters.

DPI requirements: the math behind 300

300 DPI is non-negotiable for print-quality digital downloads. Files at 72 DPI (screen resolution) look sharp on screen but produce blurry, pixelated prints because they have roughly 17 times fewer pixels per inch than a print needs to feel sharp.

The math:

  • 300 DPI × 12 inches = 3600 pixels wide
  • 72 DPI × 12 inches = 864 pixels wide (would need to be scaled up 4× to print at 12 inches, which interpolates and softens detail)

Key points:

  • 300 DPI is the professional printing standard for everything held within arm’s reach
  • Some very large prints (24×36” and up) can work at 200 DPI if viewed from across the room — but always export at 300 DPI because buyers can downscale without loss but can’t upscale without artefacts
  • Some Etsy buyers will send files to print labs like Mpix, Shutterfly, or Snapfish, which automatically reject files below 250 DPI

If you’re starting from AI-generated art, make sure you upscale to at least 4× the original output (most diffusion models produce 1024×1024 natively, which prints at only ~3.4 inches at 300 DPI — far too small for wall art). Our guide to AI upscaling for printables covers the methods.

Colour profile

Use sRGB for files intended for home printing. If you also offer print-shop-ready versions, include a CMYK variant in the listing.

  • sRGB — the colour space all consumer inkjet printers, all phone screens, and most desktop monitors use natively. This is the safe default for 90% of buyers.
  • Adobe RGB — wider gamut, but only matters if the buyer’s printer and software both support it. Most don’t.
  • CMYK — required by professional print shops. If you offer “ready for print shop” as a separate file, ship CMYK with a TIFF or PDF wrapper.

Most Etsy buyers print at home, so sRGB is the safe default. Listings that say “professional print-shop ready” in their description should always include a CMYK variant — buyers in that segment know to look for it.

File format

  • PNG for artwork with transparency, sharp edges, or text-heavy designs (typographic posters, line art, vector-style illustrations)
  • JPEG at 95%+ quality for photographs, painterly styles, and anything with smooth gradients (sky, watercolour, ink wash)
  • PDF for print-shop-ready files with embedded colour profiles and crop marks
  • TIFF for archival masters and CMYK print-shop deliveries (lossless, much larger files)

Many sellers include all three formats (PNG + JPEG + PDF) in a single listing for maximum buyer flexibility. The total file size still stays under Etsy’s 20MB-per-file limit if you’re sensible about JPEG compression.

Common buyer mistakes — and how to prevent them

The single biggest reason buyers request refunds on digital wall art:

  1. Frame mismatch. Buyer owns a 12×16” frame but downloads a 2:3 ratio file (4×6, 8×12, etc.). The piece doesn’t fit. Mitigate by listing all five ratios and adding a sentence in the description: “This download includes five sizes that fit every standard frame.”
  2. Wrong DPI for print. Buyer prints at 72 DPI and the result is blurry. Mitigate by never exporting below 300 DPI, and stating “300 DPI print-ready” prominently in the title or first description line.
  3. Colour shift from sRGB to CMYK. Print shop converts the file and the blues turn purple. Mitigate by offering a CMYK variant in your listing for advanced buyers.
  4. File too large to email. Buyer wants to email the file to a friend; your 50MB PNG won’t send. Mitigate by including a JPEG variant for sharing alongside the PNG print master.

Etsy listing photo dimensions vs product file dimensions

These are two completely different things — don’t confuse them.

  • Product files (what the buyer downloads): the dimensions and DPI specs above
  • Listing photos (the storefront images): 2000×2000 pixels, square, with the primary image at the top

Etsy’s algorithm strongly favours listings with all 10 photo slots filled, with at least one lifestyle mockup, one straight-on image of the print, one detail crop, and one “what you get” overview. Lifestyle mockups are the single biggest conversion lever on Etsy print listings — see our mockup standards guide for more.
